AI Mode is not AI Overviews

AI Mode is a standalone, conversational AI search mode that users actively open. AI Overviews is the AI answer block that appears automatically within the classic results list. Both are built into Google Search, but they are different surfaces with different core metrics and are kept strictly apart here. AI Overviews has its own page.

Reach is not search exposure

For AI Mode the core metric is user reach (> 1 billion monthly active users). A „share of affected queries“ (search exposure), as used for AI Overviews, is not the right core metric for AI Mode, because AI Mode is a deliberately chosen surface, not an automatic block in ordinary search. In principle one could later measure what share of all Google sessions happens in AI Mode; Google does not publish that figure today. Reach and query growth are never merged into a single figure.

Quick definition · continuously maintained reference (Users & Usage)

This continuously updated reference documents the reach and usage of Google AI Mode, the standalone conversational AI search mode inside Google Search, worldwide and for the United States. AI Mode is a deliberately chosen, opt-in search surface and should not be confused with AI Overviews, the AI answer block. User reach, query growth, and usage patterns are reported separately.

Reach of Google AI Mode since launch

From a U.S. launch at I/O 2025 to more than a billion users a year later.

Google first introduced AI Mode on March 5, 2025 as an experimental mode in the United States (via Search Labs). In May 2025 the broad U.S. rollout followed for all users without a Labs sign-up. From October 2025 AI Mode rolled out globally, including the DACH region. At I/O 2026 Google reported more than one billion monthly users; the Q2 2026 earnings call confirmed more than one billion monthly active users in July 2026. Queries have more than doubled every quarter since launch, according to Google.

On the 98-languages figure

The frequently cited „98 languages“ refers, per Google I/O 2026, specifically to the expansion of Personal Intelligence within AI Mode to nearly 200 countries and 98 languages. That is not the same as AI Mode's overall language coverage. For AI Mode itself the solid figures are: 35+ new languages in October 2025 and a global rollout across 40+ languages (Q3 2025).

Regional rollout

The October 2025 expansion to over 200 countries explicitly included many European markets; Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH) launched on October 8, 2025. France followed on July 22, 2026, jointly for AI Mode and AI Overviews. Google has not published country-specific user figures for these markets so far.

Usage patterns of Google AI Mode (U.S.)

One year after launch, Google released detailed U.S. usage data for the first time.

At I/O 2026 Google presented usage data for AI Mode in the United States. It describes how search behavior in AI Mode differs from classic keyword search. These patterns are reported for the U.S. only and do not transfer one to one to other markets.

Reading the patterns

These figures come from Google's own analysis (internal data and Google Trends) and describe behavioral trends, not reach. They show the direction usage is shifting: longer, more natural questions plus more planning, brainstorming, and multimodal input.

Methodology and evidence tiers

Metric hygiene

Quantities are kept separate: reach (monthly users), query growth (queries per quarter), and usage patterns (behavioral trends, U.S.). Throughout, AI Mode is not AI Overviews. Google's wording for reach is quoted exactly, both „monthly users“ and „monthly active users globally“, rather than flattened into one phrase.

Every figure carries an evidence tier, so it stays visible whether a number is official from Google, from a large market/SERP measurement, from a representative population study, or from an estimate.

Official
Figure published directly by Google (I/O, blog.google, earnings call).
Market measurement
Large third-party market/SERP measurement across very many keywords (e.g. SISTRIX, Semrush). No such measurement exists for AI Mode yet.
Representative
Representative population/user study (e.g. Pew, YouGov, Bitkom).
Estimated / context
Modeling/extrapolation as a range, or supporting context; not a direct measurement.
